Spirit Week is going to play out much differently this year than years past. Each class will have their own Spirit Day assembly this week consisting of an assembly in the gym, an advisor water balloon toss, a flag relay race, a donut-on-a-string eating contest, and Kona Ice and pastry snacks to end the day.
The theme this year is Musical Mayhem. Each grade has been assigned a musical genre and color for their dress up days, which coincide with their assembly day.
Seventh grade – Orange/Christian Music
Eighth grade – Green/Disco Music
Freshmen – Yellow/R&B Music
Sophomores – Purple/Disney Music
Juniors – Red/Pop Music
Seniors – Blue/Rock Music
Dress-up points will be given based on the percentage of people in class colors and with theme-based props. At least one accessory must be worn or in hand for Spirit points to be counted. Classes also earn points for their mascots, sportsmanship, assembly day activities, window designs, class flags, class cheer, and for showcasing their assigned musical genres in pre-recorded music videos. The music video replaces the traditional Pepper Squad event.
Tug-of-war competitions have been scaled down this year, with a 5 on 5 format, and these took place last week. All grades (7th through 12th) are tied with 5 points each after the competitions.
This year’s fundraiser will be hosted by the NHS Environmental & Fundraising Committee. Classes will compete to bring in the most recyclables (cans and bottles) and donate the most money for the Eagles Kokua Fund, which provides additional tuition assistance to HBA families who have been financially impacted by COVID-19. The deadines for dropping off recyclables are as follows:
Tues, Apr 13: Juniors at lunch
Wed, Apr 14: Sophomores at lunch
Thu, Apr 15: Freshmen at lunch
Fri, Apr 16: 7th, 8th, and seniors at lunch
Each can or bottle is worth 5 cents. High school collection stations will be in the senior pavilion (before school) and in the mall area (during lunch.) The middle school collection station will be in Mr. Lockridge’s room.
For Spirit Day assemblies, each grade will be split up into groups and will rotate through a series of activies. Group lists can be found around the campus – in the senior area, cafeteria, outside the gym and the learning center.
While the ramp up to Spirit Week has felt slow compared to other years, many are starting to get excited for a somewhat different week of school. Sophomore Timothy Shimizu said, “Yup! I’m definitely looking forward to the modified schedules and activities next week. It’s really nice having shortened classes and day on its own, but being able to gather with everyone in my grade again and doing those fun activities together to create a unity that we haven’t had since last year makes it three times as much exciting.”
