CAPTION: Students can submit prayer requests via the three Prayer Lockers on the high school campus: #243 by the gym; #394 along the stairs by A200; and #125 in the Senior Pavilion.
Last week at chapel, the High School Christian Ministries Team (CMT) announced the start of Prayer Lockers. The team invited students to submit anonymous prayer requests to designated prayer lockers around campus.
These requests will be collected and prayed for during the CMT’s weekly prayer meetings that are held on Mondays before school. Hannah Garces, a senior, came up with the idea for Prayer Lockers after she saw a prayer and petition wall at a chapel in Creighton University. (Garces is a Christian Ministry intern and the Spiritual Life Officer in the high school student council.) She explained, “In one of [Creighton’s] chapels, they have slots in the wall where you put notecards in with your prayers.” After sharing what she saw with the CMT, the group came up with a plan to use three unused lockers on campus to collect prayer requests. Using the notecards and pens attached to the front of these lockers, students can slip in their written requests into the slots on the locker door. Garces added, “We hope that this will be a way to remind everyone that they can go to people for prayer, especially if they’re too shy to go up to someone and ask.”
Noah Pourciau, Christian Ministries Assistant, is excited to see a student-led project come to life. “Praying for each other is really great. It gives you a love for your neighbor that comes from God. Naturally oftentimes we want to separate ourselves from our neighbor; we want to judge our neighbor. But whenever you’re praying for someone regularly, you actually begin to love them more like Jesus loves them,” he said. Besides benefitting the people who are being prayed for, a regular prayer time for prayer requests, Pourciau believes, will help students make prayer a part of their “rhythm of living.” He added, “Prayer is the oxygen of Christian life.”
There are three Prayer Lockers on the high school campus: #243 by the gym; #394 along the stairs by A200; and #125 in the Senior Pavilion. The Monday morning prayer gatherings led by the CMT takes place in A200 from 7:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., and it is open to all students and staff. Students who want to be part of the CMT can sign up at the high school club fair at lunch on August 26.
