High school Physics and Oceanography students were tasked with building cardboard boats and paddles using only duct tape, caulk and cardboard.
On December 5, their vessels were put to the test at the Wet ‘n’ Wild waterpark in Kapolei in HBA’s first Cardboard Boat Regatta. “Quicksilver”, built by Rhet Sugihara (captain), Davin Miyahara, Matthew Omiya, Jarrett Toyama and Melanie Wong, won the regatta ahead of 28 other boats in the race.
Awards were also given out for the best looking boat (Vogue Award), the most creative design (Pride of the Regatta Award), the most creative dress or costumes (Swag Award), the most spirited team (Pom-Pom Award), and the most spectacular sinking (Titanic Award).
What I learned from this field trip: Science is never boring!
