Kylie Yamauchi

Hi my name is Kylie Yamauchi and I am a senior. I took Intro to Newspaper in my freshman year and I’ve been a part of it ever since. When I’m not at school, you can find me at the Ala Wai either paddling or working out. (The Ala Wai isn’t as gross as it seems, by the way.) I’m a dedicated fan of the show Teen Wolf and the movie Whiplash, mostly because Miles Teller stars in it. I don’t have any musical talents but I can rap the whole Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song and some parts of Alphabet Aerobics—I’m in the process of learning the entire song. Follow me on Instagram (@kylie_yama) and I promise to follow back, most of the time. Fair warning, my feed is 90% paddling photos.

As the school year ends, students begin to consider applying for part time summer jobs. For many juniors, working a summer job is a new and mysterious step toward adulthood. On the other hand, many seniors have worked part time jobs last summer and some have even continued working throughout the school year. Seniors Mikayla Mau, Amelia …

On April 16-18, HBA’s ministry team held its first Refresh Camp, specifically created for present and upcoming student leaders. Similar to grade camps, students were given the chance to attend family …

With student council elections taking place this week, an all-female group of candidates will voice their goals for next year in today's special assembly. "I think voters should consider leadership experience, evidence of support for the school, and who they think will help move the student body forward in good ways," says Bible teacher and …

Junior Annemarie Lee’s adoption story lies within her Chinese name. Her adoptive parents, Tony and Karen Lee, named her Mei Mei after the plum flower that grows during the winter. To the Lee family, the flower is a constant reminder of Annemarie’s survival through the harsh winters in China before her adoption. Annemarie spent the …

Two weeks ago, I watched the highly anticipated film American Sniper and exited the theater feeling hopeless, weighed down, and angry. These feelings overpowered any sense of inspiration I expected to have coming out of the movie. I sat for two gruesome hours watching the most lethal sniper in America, Chris Kyle, risk everything to …

This morning on the way to school, junior Christian Eaton saved two lost dogs stranded in the middle of Pali Highway near the HBA high school campus. Thanks to him and HBA Student Services, both dogs were returned safely to their owner, Nuuanu area resident Mary Walston. According to Walston, she was walking her dogs—Kuuipo …

Photographs by Shelby Suzuki ('16) On the night of December 20, alternative rock band Young the Giant finished off their Mind Over Matter album tour with a final performance on Oahu. A group of around 20 HBA students attended the concert at The Republik and listened to a wide selection of songs from the album, …

On October 24, after a field trip to the state capitol, the Class of 2018 gathered in the Middle School MPR to participate in the Divergent games, planned by their freshman class council.
