Kylie Yamauchi

Hi my name is Kylie Yamauchi and I am a senior. I took Intro to Newspaper in my freshman year and I’ve been a part of it ever since. When I’m not at school, you can find me at the Ala Wai either paddling or working out. (The Ala Wai isn’t as gross as it seems, by the way.) I’m a dedicated fan of the show Teen Wolf and the movie Whiplash, mostly because Miles Teller stars in it. I don’t have any musical talents but I can rap the whole Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song and some parts of Alphabet Aerobics—I’m in the process of learning the entire song. Follow me on Instagram (@kylie_yama) and I promise to follow back, most of the time. Fair warning, my feed is 90% paddling photos.

On Thursday October 23, HBA’s eighth graders arrived at Camp Pu’u Kahea for three days and two nights of camp. Small group sessions, worship, daily chapel services, and activities focused students on their relationship with others and how God can reflect through them.  This year’s eighth grade camp was titled Friends, Family, Faith. Christian Ministries …

In our lives, there are certain stories we never forget. These stories introduce themselves to us, asking for a chance to earn a place in our hearts. The ones that win us over stay with us and become a part of our identity. Graham Salisbury’s Under The Blood-Red Sun is one of those stories that …

What better way to avoid the sweltering summer heat than in a comfortable air conditioned theater, watching a movie. This summer break I did exactly that. I looked for any excuse to spend the day in a movie theater, preferably the $5 one in Kailua, where I could escape the muggy outdoors. This summer's list …

On April 25, close to 600 people attended HBA’s Arts and Film Festival (HBAAFF), showcasing student artwork and films at the high school campus for the first time. Making use of the new Arts & Science building, and Learning Center, the festival gave visitors a chance to enjoy and browse through projects done in Art, …

John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars is not your average love story. It’s not one where you’ll find two unstoppable lovers standing in the face of danger, nor one that takes place in a happy-go-lucky world. If you were looking for a book like that, I’d recommend Twilight or Dear John. The Fault In …

Photographs by Kylie Yamauchi ('16) & courtesy of HBA parent Dennis Kaida. On April 26, students and families of HBA gathered at the elementary campus for the school’s annual fun fair. The fair, organized by the Parent-Teacher Fellowship (PTF), offered a variety of food booths, games, rides, and entertainment. Like past years, the majority of the …

On April 9, 21 students were stabbed at a high school in Pittsburgh.  That same day, HBA coincidentally conducted a lockdown drill during the school day at both the high school and middle school. As the announcement for the drill was made, I sat at my desk with a quiz in front of me, happy …

While many students enjoyed the local sun and waves this Spring Break, a group of 0ver 50 freshmen and sophomores explored the concrete jungles of New York City in 30-degree weather. HBA’s annual East Coast Trip took the students through Virginia, Washington D.C, Pennsylvania, and New York. Along the way, students visited Gettysburg, the Pennsylvania …

Glowing Heart Ministry returned to HBA for Christian Emphasis Week this year. The ministry is a worship team made out of nineteen singers, musicians, and dancers from Texas. Arriving in Hawaii last Wednesday, Glowing Heart members also got a chance to visit the North Shore and hike to Maunawili Falls.  During the week, they lead …
