Kylie Yamauchi

Hi my name is Kylie Yamauchi and I am a senior. I took Intro to Newspaper in my freshman year and I’ve been a part of it ever since. When I’m not at school, you can find me at the Ala Wai either paddling or working out. (The Ala Wai isn’t as gross as it seems, by the way.) I’m a dedicated fan of the show Teen Wolf and the movie Whiplash, mostly because Miles Teller stars in it. I don’t have any musical talents but I can rap the whole Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song and some parts of Alphabet Aerobics—I’m in the process of learning the entire song. Follow me on Instagram (@kylie_yama) and I promise to follow back, most of the time. Fair warning, my feed is 90% paddling photos.

Sommers took the award for Talent and was named Miss Congeniality. Hong won the Lifestyle and Fitness award and was named Miss Photogenic. She was also named Miss Latina Hawaii Outstanding …

Earlier this semester, I held a strong disagreement toward one of HBA's dress code rules. The rule stated that students could not wear "unapproved clothing, such as... non-HBA approved jackets." The high school student handbook lists the following as HBA-approved jackets: the black Mills zipper jacket, the Mills rain jacket, the gray HBA hoodie, and …

Photograph courtesy of Mark Yamauchi and Carolyn Caballes. "Paddling isn't a sport." I don't know how many times I have heard these exasperating words come from the mouths of my fellow classmates. It really bothers me, especially since I am part of the PAC-Five paddling team. Paddling may not be what you might typically think …

Each new year offers a fresh start to achieve new goals and get rid of old habits. At the start of the year, a lot of people make resolutions to change something in their life or to accomplish something. Here are some 2014 New Year's resolutions that HBA students and faculty have made: "Sleep less, eat less, …

The sophomores emerged as overall winners, taking the Mana Cup in their first Spirit Week win. The seniors and juniors took second and third place, respectively. On Friday, the last day of Spirit Week, students arrived at school dressed in HBA colors—black, gold, and white. Participation for this dress up day resulted in a four-way tie for 100% …

Disney kicked off the Christmas season with its release of the animated movie Frozen. After hitting the box office in November alongside Catching Fire, Frozen captivated the hearts of both children and adults. Frozen tells the story of a naive princess named Anna and her journey to find her older sister Elsa, whose magical powers …

This year's Spirit Week is themed Misunderstood Monsters. Class mascots range from Team Rocket from Pokémon to Swiper the Fox from Dora the Explorer. Students get to dress up according to different themes, starting off the week with athletic wear and ending on Friday with school colors—black, gold, and white. Classes also take part in …
