Eagle Eye Wins Best-In-State

For the fifth year in a row, Eagle Eye staff took home the 2019 Best-in-State overall title for HBA’s journalism program at the Hawaii High School Journalism Awards.

Fourteen Hawaii high schools—six private and eight public—participated in this year’s competition, and the Eagle Eye took first place in four categories (Best Video, Best Portrait Photo, Best Layout/Design, Best Social Media) in both the private school and state divisions.

Sacred Hearts Academy and Mililani High School finished second and third respectively in the overall state competition. Even though HBA acquired the most points cumulatively over all nineteen categories, Sacred Hearts won more Best-in-State awards, making the competition a tight one between the two private schools.

Led by editor-in-chief Kristin Lau, the Eagle Eye team also placed first in the online division, which comprises video, multimedia, blog, website and social media entries. This year, freshman Zadie Young was named the Most Valuable Staffer for the Eagle Eye for her contributions to the team as both photographer and writer.

The results of this year’s competition were announced over a luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel on April 17, with students and faculty advisors from participating schools in attendance. Hosted by the Hawaii Publishers Association, with support from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and MidWeek, the event also featured a keynote address by Hawaii Magazine editor Catherine Toth Fox.
