Every year the high School Environmental Club celebrates Earth Week with fun events on campus. Since an in-person celebration isn’t possible this year, the club officers wanted to celebrate virtually instead.

In partnership with the Eagle Eye, the club is sharing daily Earth Day Moment videos each day this week as a way to reconnect with nature and appreciate God’s amazing creation during this time of isolation.

April 20, 2020: Happy Earth Week from the Environmental Club! The club’s president, Cydni Yoshida, kicks off the week-long virtual celebration of Earth Day with the first in a series of Earth Day Moment videos. Enjoy!

April 21, 2020: COVID-19 isn’t just affecting humans; our animal friends are being impacted as well. There are animals in countries all over the world that have become dependent on humans for food. Now that there’s no one to feed them due to stay at home orders, what’s become of them? Watch today’s Earth Day Moment video to find out!

April 22: HAPPY 50th EARTH DAY!!! 💚🌎💙
Take a deep breath. Notice anything? Does the air seem cleaner to you? Well, it’s not a coincidence, in addition to the animals, the global quarantine has affected our air quality as well–for the better! The change is even evident in satellite data! Check out today’s Earth Day Moment video as Kela Kaida tells us all about how air pollution has changed over the past 4 months and how we can help keep our air clean even after things go back to normal.

April 23: Earlier in the week we learned about how the wild animals are adapting to a world with fewer people out and about, but what about animals in zoos, aquariums, and wildlife preserves? Do you think they’re getting lonely without daily visits from crowds of adoring fans? There’s only one way to find out: live animal cams at zoos, aquariums, and wildlife parks across the globe! Plus, what better way to reconnect with all your favorite animal friends that we’re sure you’ve been missing lately, especially with all of this Earth Day talk?

Check out today’s Earth Day Moment video as Lia Honbo shows you her favorite animal cam, checks in with some animals in African wildlife preserves to see how they’re faring during the pandemic, and gives us insight on just how important protecting all animal life is to us and our planet.

April 24: It’s the last day of our week-long Earth Day celebration! But who says the fun has to end?! Instead, let’s keep the Earth-Love-Fest going a little longer with a Nature Photography Contest run by the Environmental Club and hosted by the Eagle Eye. From today, April 24th, to May 4th, let’s flood HBA’s EagleEye and Instagram with refreshing photos of the great outdoors that we can enjoy while stuck inside the great indoors. As an added bonus, we will have prizes for the top 5 photographs as chosen by the Environmental Club officers. To find out more, including the fabulous prizes that await the talented winners, check out today’s Earth Day Moment video by Logan Kaneshiro.

To submit your photograph(s) and for all the finer details and rules, please open the HBA Earth Day Photography Contest Submission Form. The contest is open to anyone in the HBA Ohana: students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni so please spread the word far and wide. Let’s bring some of the beauty of God’s creation to our little corner of the internet.

Mahalo for your participation! Please email Mrs. Mitchell at cmitchell@hba.net with any questions. Good luck!
