Volleyball Boys Poised for New Season

The Boys Varsity Varsity team placed fourth at the Maui Invitational Volleyball Tournament held at Seabury Hall where they participated in a two-day, ten-team tourney.

The boys team traveled to Seabury High School in Makawao, Maui from February 28 to March 1 for the tournament. There were two pools of five teams and HBA’s pool consisted of Moanalua, Baldwin, King Kekaulike, and Kamehameha-Maui. The Eagles finished the first round with a 2-2 record, losing in two close sets to Moanalua (16-21, 20-21) and to King Kekaulike in three (21-11, 19-21, 4-5). Because Baldwin and Moanalua had a better overall record, HBA dropped to the silver bracket for the following day’s matches.

The next day followed the same format, except that teams played two 15-point sets instead of 21-point sets. HBA rallied against King Kekaulike, winning 15-6 and 15-3. HBA went 4-0 the rest of the day before playing for the third place title against the third place team of the gold bracket, Hana High. Despite a strong start by the Eagles, Hana prevailed, winning 25-15.

HBA finished fourth overall in the tournament. Senior Matthew Kishaba was named to the 2014 All-Star team. Reflecting back on the tournament, junior BJ Hosaka said he learned to “never give up, even when we’re down. He added, “We still have to keep fighting.”

On returning to Oahu, the boys varsity team kicked off regular season play with wins over Damien and Hawaiian Mission.
