Not far from HBA’s Nuuanu campus lies the lush Nuuanu Watershed area, which features the Nuuanu reservoir and is surrounded by a number of hiking trails.

One of these trails—the Lulumahu Trail— takes hikers to the Lulumahu Falls and has become a popular hike with locals and tourists. The trail boasts views of the scenic Nuuanu reservoir and may oftentimes be muddy. What many hikers don’t know is that the trail is located within a restricted watershed area and permits are required for entry. These day use permits may be obtained for free at Hawaii’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife’s Makiki branch or online ($2.50 processing fee) at their permitting website.
