For the fourth time in a row, Eagle Eye staff took home the 2018 Best-in-state overall title for HBA’s journalism program at the Hawaii High School Journalism Awards.

Fourteen Hawaii high schools—six private and eight public—participated in this year’s competition, and the Eagle Eye took first place in seven categories in the private school division and four categories (Best Sport Writing, Best Portrait Photo, Best Website, Best Social Media) at the state level. Sacred Hearts Academy and Mililani High School finished second and third respectively in the overall state competition.

The 2017-18 Eagle Eye team is led by Editor-in-chief Joel Lau, a senior. In the private school division, Lau took second with both his opinion piece about new teachers and his multimedia presentation about the Class of 2018’s Spirit Week journey. He was also named the Most Valuable Staffer for the Eagle Eye.

The results of this year’s competition were announced over a luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel, with students and faculty advisors from participating schools in attendance. Hosted by the Hawaii Publishers Association, with support from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and MidWeek, the event also featured a keynote address by Hawaii News Now reporter and journalist Mileka Lincoln.
