This past November, One Direction continued the tradition of their annual music release with the album “Made in the AM”.

This is the English-Irish’s band fifth album in five years. The songs in this new album differ greatly from their previous releases as the band compensates for the absence of one of its original members, Zayn Malik. The new work also reflects the band’s growth and maturity in their music careers and social relationships.

Before this release, the band embraced pop culture stereotypes and typical boy band material. “Made in the AM,” however, features a classic rock theme with folk influences. The lyrics on the new album put a twist on the typical ideals portrayed in modern music. Songs such as “Love You Goodbye” and “Long Way Down” speak about loss and shaky relationships. “Never Enough” as well as “Temporary Fix,” perhaps two of the most intense works from the album, emphasize the band’s changing image, focusing on more adult themes of love. Set to upbeat tunes, the lyrics include mature themes like one-night stands and friends with benefits.

The one thing that remains unchanged is the inclusion of the stereotypical, tear-jerker love songs that their previous albums have always included. Songs such as “Olivia” and “I Want to Write You a Song” add a charming and familiar voice to the album.

The album appeals to a wide group of people as it includes different styles and sounds. If you are a hardcore Directioner and love everything that One Direction releases, then buying the entire album is definitely a good idea. If One Direction is new to you, it may be better to take the songs on one at a time. The album as a whole, however, is definitely worth a listen.

Though the band has formally announced that they would be taking a break from touring and songwriting, Directioners can only hope that this is not the last they will hear from the boy band. Until then, the loop button on fans’ Spotify playlists will have to satisfy their One Direction needs.
